ASPHALT FLAT ROOF CONSTRUCTION, REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT WITH AN EPDM RUBBER ROOFING MEMBRANE
An EPDM rubber roof can be bonded to existing asphalt roofs, but this needs to be the FlexiProof Fleece-Backed EPDM Membrane.
It cannot be bonded to uneven surfaces such as shingles, which hinders the membrane from successfully bonding to the surface. If you plan to place a rubber membrane across an existing roof covering, you must ensure the surface is suitable for bonding.
Type of Bonding Surface | FlexiProof One Piece | FlexiProof Fleece-Backed |
Timber | Water Based Deck Adhesive | Water Based Deck Adhesive |
Brick | Contact Adhesive | Contact Adhesive |
Metal | Contact Adhesive | Contact Adhesive |
Felt | NO | PU Adhesive |
Asphalt | NO | PU Adhesive |
How to check
- Is the existing structure free of any rot? You must check the existing structure and deck for any signs of rot.
- The rot may spread and affect the roof’s integrity if left unaddressed.
- Asphalt and shingles aren’t ideal for a rubber membrane to be bonded onto.
- However, for surfaces such as felt, overlaying and adding a Fleece Backed EPDM rubber roof is perfect for protecting the existing roof coating.
At Rubber Roofing Direct, we offer a range of training courses for professional roofers. The training courses are designed to increase your knowledge of EPDM flat roofs and how to install them on various surfaces.
