What is the Best Material for a Flat Roof?

When it comes to choosing a material for your flat roof, it’s important that you, a homeowner, consider a range of factors to make sure you get the most out of your roof.

There are a range of flat roof materials that are commonly used in the UK, however there’s a number of reasons why opting to install a rubber membrane onto your roof is becoming increasingly popular today.

The best material for a flat roof is EPDM

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM), is compromised of a synthetic rubber membrane that is designed to last far longer than any other flat roof material.

  • Inexpensive to purchase and easy to install
  • Environmentally friendly and 100% recyclable
  • Incredibly durable in extreme weather conditions
  • Is moss and algae free
  • Can last in excess of 50 years
  • Energy-efficient compared to traditional roofing materials
  • Flame-Free and low life-cycle cost

Because of its rubber properties, an EPDM won’t degrade because of weather or age. It acts as a waterproofing sheet and EPDM products, like Flexi Proof, are environmentally friendly too, with a minimal environmental impact to be made and the material is 100% recyclable.

What other flat roof materials are there?

Asphalt is a traditional material used for a flat roof. It is typically bonded with felt and then placed onto the flat roof with nails or cement. Although it may be inexpensive to purchase, asphalt is more prone to degrade over a shorter period of time, meaning that more money will be spent on maintaining and eventually replacing the surface.

Tiles are another popular roofing material and because they’re made from clay or concrete, they tend to be incredibly resistant to high winds and weather. Although they may look more aesthetically pleasing, tiles require a lot of maintenance and cleaning to make sure algae, chips and cracks don’t occur, problems not associated with an EPDM flat roof.
