HOW IS EPDM RUBBER MADE?
EPDM STANDS FOR ETHYLENE PROPYLENE DIENE MONOMER.
It is a unique synthetic elastomer rubber that boasts several key properties, such as high durability, UV resistance, and long-lasting.
This is because of the saturated polymer properties found in EPDM rubber, which makes it incredibly resistant to heat, UV, ozone and light compared to natural rubber or neoprene. EPDM? Like other rubber materials, the membrane or sheet is easily produced and is most commonly manufactured as a single-sheet rubber, which makes it ideal for a flat rubber roof.
EPDM features
- Heat and cold resistant.
- Environmentally friendly / 100% recyclable.
- Durable, resilient and long-lasting material.
- Offered in a single, seamless sheet.
- The rubber membrane is waterproof and lightweight.
- Incredibly low life-cycle maintenance cost.
- Heat-free installation.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EPDM AND NATURAL RUBBER?
Both types of rubber have their advantages and disadvantages. Natural rubber comfortably remains the stronger elastomer, has a high resistance to abrasions, and has impressive tensile strength.
However, regarding rubber roofing, the EPDM rubber membranes’ biggest strengths are often highlighted as common weaknesses for natural rubber.
Unlike natural rubber, EPDM has impressive UV and ozone resistance properties, making it ideal for flat roofs. How long should a rubber roof last?
Essentially, the EPDM rubber membrane mirrors many benefits of natural rubber while making the material UV-resistant.
