EPDM Roofing Calculator

What thickness EPDM should I use?

The thickness of your membrane sheet will depend on various factors, all of which depend on the specific requirements of your roofing project. For example, you must consider the building type, local climate, weather conditions, traffic and usage, warranty, and longevity. The right thickness will be essential in ensuring the membrane performs as expected and lasts for many years to come.

Thicknesses available and uses

  • 14mm EPDM Membrane (45 mil): The most common thickness for residential roofing projects, providing good protection and durability. Provides good performance for average weather conditions and everyday wear and tear.
  • 2mm EPDM Membrane (47 mil): This sheet best suits residential projects. It provides good durability and weather resistance for typical home roof applications. It can also be used for light commercial applications where there is light foot traffic and exposure. This membrane offers additional durability, providing the ideal balance between cost and long-term protection from the elements.
  • 52mm EPDM Membrane (60 mil): Most ideal for commercial and industrial roofing applications that require stronger properties as it offers a better resistance to punctures, tears and harsher weather. Suitable for occasional foot traffic. Covers up lumps and bumps better on uneven surfaces.
  • 6mm EPDM Membrane (102.4 mil): This membrane is best for roofs and areas with heavy foot traffic or if the roof needs to support equipment or machinery due to its resistance to physical damage. The thicker the membrane, the higher the level of protection it offers.

What’s recommended?

If you want an accessible roof with a protective cover, then a 1.52mm membrane might be the best choice, particularly for green roofs or roofs that will have solar panels installed. On the cost factor, 1.14mm membranes are used commonly on most roofing applications, such as extensions, dormers, porches, carports, sheds, garden rooms, and garages. It’s the most popular thickness.

Choosing between 1.2mm and 1.5mm

Both membranes are suitable for commercial and residential applications, and they’re installed exactly the same way using a water-based adhesive on the main deck and contact adhesive around the perimeter. If you plan to not install anything on top of the EPDM, then we recommend opting for the 1.2 membrane, as it works out more cost-effectively for our customers. However, the 1.5 is a popular membrane if customers plan to install another product on top, for example, decking, ballast, screeding before you put tiles on or even green roofs.
