Less thermally efficient than a warm roof construction, cold roof construction remains the most common form of construction for existing flat roofs.
A cold deck is constructed as follows:
The insulation material is placed immediately above the ceiling between the rafters. The 18mm roof grade deck is then fixed on top of the rafters leaving suitable air flow between the insulation and the deck. The EPDM rubber roof membrane is then installed using the water based deck adhesiveonto the deck.
This is known as a cold roof because the roof deck and roof space are close to the external air temperature. It means that the void below the roof deck needs to be well ventilated if condensation is to be avoided.
An EPDM rubber roofing membrane is the perfect material to finish off a cold deck design. With a high resistance to punctures, tearing and splits, EPDM doesn’t rot and will last for in excess of 50 years.
If you’re working to a cold deck design for your roof, make the sensible choice and choose FlexiProof EPDM rubber roofing membrane as the final layer.
