Is EPDM better than TPO?

EPDM and TPO are common roofing systems for flat roofs. The single-ply membrane is typically made out of sheets of rubber or other synthetics that are chemically adhered.

  • EPDM. An EPDM rubber membrane consists of synthetic rubber. This type of flat roof system has been used since the 1960s.
  • TPO. A TPO roofing system is a single layer of synthetics and reinforcing scrim and has been more commonly used in the last couple of decades.

Although both are better alternatives to traditional materials such as felt, because of its rubber properties, an EPDM flat roof tends to last 5 – 10 years longer than a TPO flat roof.

TPO comes in a range of colours whilst an EPDM membrane generally comes in black, however, it can be painted on.

Another benefit that TPO offers is its high-reflective properties that can be ideal for solar heat reflective properties.

However, due to the material used for a TPO, it can be far harder to repair tears and requires a more extensive installation process.

Overall, an EPDM flat roof offers more advantages as its inexpensive, fast to install and boasts stronger properties and long-lasting properties compared to TPO.
